Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are ignored and neglected. I believe it is increasingly important that we recognize the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our country, so today's blog entry is a tribute to the heroes that have served the United States.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. To read more about the history of Memorial Day, click here.
If you haven't read my previous blog posts on the All American Beef Battalion, I would like to recognize this organization this Memorial Day. The All American Beef Battalion is a group of individuals within the United States beef cattle industry dedicated to support the troops fighting the global war on terror. They work to organize and sponsor steak feeds, entertainment, and programs with Service Members and their families. This organization was the idea of Bill Broadie, a Kansas cattleman and Vietnam veteran, who wanted to promote the beef industry while giving thanks to the troops. In their first year of service, they have served over 10,000 soldiers and their families. I volunteer as their press secretary, and I'm so honored to be a part of this outstanding organization.
Wishing everyone a very happy Memorial Day! My thoughts and prayers are with all of the men and women that have served our country throughout our nation's history. Without a doubt, those that gave their lives in honor of the United States are truly heroes.
