Alta Genetics Inc. and Integrated Genetic Management, Inc. (IGM) have joined forces to enhance commercial genetic programs.
IGM, is a genetic services company owned by five families: R.A. Brown Ranch, Throckmorton, TX; Gardiner Angus, Ashland, KS; Fink Beef Genetics, Manhattan, KS; Nichols Farms, Anita, IA; and Dodd Land and Cattle, Muleshoe, TX.
IGM provides customers with proven genetics, including custom AI programs, replacement heifer management, feeder calf placement and bull and heifer buying. Calgary, Alberta-based Alta Genetics has serviced AI customers in the beef seedstock and dairy segments for more than 35 years.
"IGM was attractive to us because of its commercial programs and the genetics the five owner-families represent. IGM can provide the genetic management and Alta Genetics can provide the semen sourcing," says Willie Altenburg, Alta Genetics beef program manager.
Altenburg adds that the commercial orientation of IGM is a benefit to Alta Genetics and to commercial customers.
"Commercial producers have got to get the right cattle to start with before our industry can have enough product in the chain to make a difference in a value-added system," says Troy Dodd, a managing partner with IGM.
"Our focus from an integrated standpoint is to get a more complete sire package to enable our customers to develop cattle with an end target in mind - cattle that can be sold into different value-added programs," Dodd says.
