Meat Market Update | Cutout loses steam, rib primal drops $7

Ed Czerwien, market analyst based in Amarillo, Texas, offers a concise summary of how last week's beef trade impacted the cattle market and beef prices.

The daily spot Choice box beef cutout ended the week last Friday at $225.59 which was $1.45 higher compared to previous Friday. The cutout was helped again by the rising middle meats. Last year, the cutout was $223.43; so it continues to maintain a higher price than the previous year. The daily Choice rib primal jumped $5 this week and the daily choice loin primal was up $3, both driving the rally but they both lost all of their weekly gains by Tuesday, March 20. In fact, the daily choice rib primal lost $7 in just two days so these changes really impact the cutout.
