Weekly Cattle Market Wrap Up

Weekly Cattle Market Wrap-Up | More bred cows, feeder cattle head to town

USDA Market Reporter Ed Czerwien provides his weekly market outlook on feeder cattle and slaughter cows.

Feeder cattle receipts at the test auctions jumped 18,000 head, helped by better weather conditions and were at 42,600 head. Prices improved early week but yearlings started to drop on Wednesday, however calf prices jumped quite a bit higher as the recent moisture improved the native grass grazing potential.

Looking at the slaughter cow market, there was a very big run of cows at the test auctions with 9,600 head, but over half of the cows were bred cows. Slaughter cow prices were steady to $1 higher but cow meat prices were lower on Wednesday after having wide swings up and down all week.
