KANSAS CITY, Mo. ¬¬¬— Excitement and enthusiasm filled the air in the packed Beef Palace Auction Arena for the Mile High Night Hereford Sale, Jan. 17, at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver. The Hereford offering was top-notch and the bidding proved it. When Eddie Sims, National Cattle Services Inc., silenced the gavel for the final time, $455,150 was spent, 10.83 bulls averaged $11,985, and 26 females commanded $10,252 per head. Five flushes brought $4,760 per flush, and 52 embryos averaged $673. The embryo average was up more than $200 even with 21 more embryos sold. The overall average was $10,762.
Topping the sale at $38,750 was Lot 34, ECR L18 Extra Deep 9279, consigned by Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch, Ree Heights, S.D. The Fawcett Syndicate bought a quarter-interest in this outstanding young son of GO Excel L18. The first pick of Cooper Hereford Ranch’s 2009 heifer-calf crop was the second high-selling lot at $26,000. Lohr Herefords, Peoria, Ill., purchased the choice. This was the first time the Cooper family has offered such a pick and Lohrs will get to choose from 75 top-quality heifers.
Close behind was Lot 21, NJW 78P 63N Ladysport 51W ET, who sold for $25,500 to Buck Cattle Co. and Swanson Herefords, Madill, Okla. Consigned by Ned and Jan Ward, Sheridan, Wyo., 51W is a February 2009 daughter of TH JWR SOP 16G 57G Tundra 63N, who is also the sire of the 2010 NWSS grand champion horned female.
