A year ago, Kellie Pickler announced that she was becoming a vegetarian, joining her country music cohort, Carrie Underwood. Because country music has a fan base of so many agriculturalists, I have a hard time understanding why these gals are still in business. Recently, PETA announced Pickler as the Sexiest Vegetarian Alive , Of her reasoning to become a vegetarian, Pickler told People Magazine, ""One night I couldn't sleep and I was up just Googling random stuff and I'm like, 'Hmmm, PETA. I saw all the videos and I just thought it was horrible. It's animal cruelty. A lot of it has to do with knowing what happens to the animals. It really bothered me and so I will not eat meat."
Well, it's no secret that I'm not a fan of Carrie Underwood , a vocal vegetarian who actively teams up with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), and you've heard me rant and rave about the "Oprah Effect," where anything Oprah says, the world listens to as fact. It's unfortunate that others like Kellie Pickler are now following suit. Time and time again, these celebrities stand up and against America's food producers, heightening an already troubling outlook consumers have on farmers and ranchers. Celebrity endorsements like these result in skewed conception of how food is produced, and that is truly unfortunate.
Even though we don't have fame, fortune and our faces on the cover of magazines, farmers and ranchers have the capability to feed 144 people each year. We have the determination and drive to produce a safe and wholesome product to feed the world. Agriculturalists are truly people to look up to, and today, I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and tell your story. It's time we let our voices be heard. Who's with me?
