Filming A Holiday Beef Commercial

filiming a beef commericalI am a member of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Auxiliary, which does beef promotions throughout the year. We donate beef roasts to food pantries for families at Thanksgiving; we hand out beef sticks at baseball tournaments and other sporting events; we give away Beef Bucks; we donate books to schools; and we support the National Beef Ambassador Program.

One of our recent promotional projects was the creation of a holiday beef commercial. Produced by Sioux Falls, SD-based KELO News, it will begin airing on Nov. 19 and continue up to Christmas.

We shot the commercial at my mom’s house, so we decorated for the holidays early. I prepared the food and wrote the 30-second commercial. The script read like this:

“From decorating the Christmas tree to wrapping presents, the holidays are a busy time of the year. Simplify your holiday menu [3] with tasty, nutritious beef.

“Create beautiful appetizers like beef pinwheels and mini meatballs with apricot dipping sauce. Warm up with a bowl of Autumn Beef and Cider Stew. Wow your guests with elegant Peppery Beef Rib Roast.

“All these recipes and more can be found at beefitswhatsfordinner.com [4].

“Happy Holidays from South Dakota cattle ranchers and the beef checkoff program.”

Once the commercial is finished, I will share it on this blog. I’m excited to see the final product, and hopefully it will inspire folks to choose beef for their family gatherings this holiday season [6].

As a cattle producer, I believe it’s critical to promote beef and educate folks on nutrition, preparation and recipe ideas, as well as debunk myths and dispel rumors in negative media reports. This is a part of my job description, and I challenge you -- no matter if you are a student, a rancher, a nutritionist or a food scientist -- to make it a part of yours, too.
