Award Marks Two Decades of Alpharma Sponsorship and Support
BRIDGEWATER, N.J., Sept. 14, 2009—Announced during the annual meeting of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) held in Omaha, Neb., last week, the 2009 AABP Award of Excellence has been awarded to Pamela Ruegg, DVM, of the University of Wisconsin. The award recognizes Dr. Ruegg for her outstanding contributions to the practice of bovine veterinary medicine. This year marks the 20th consecutive year that Alpharma Animal Health has sponsored the award.
“The Award of Excellence is especially prestigious because winners are nominated by their peers,” said Denny Hausmann, DVM, Technical Services Manager, Alpharma Animal Health. “In addition, past winners review the award applications and vote to determine who will join their ranks as the newest recipient of the Award of Excellence.”
To be considered for the AABP Award of Excellence, nominees' professional activities must have had a consistent and direct influence on daily activities of veterinarians in bovine practice. Further considerations include:
1. Contributions to continuing education for bovine practitioners.
2. Active participation in organized veterinary medicine and/or specialty boards.
3. Relationship with and contributions to the bovine industry.
4. Publications significant to the practice of bovine medicine in the past two years.
5. Regulatory or legislative activities during the past two years that have enhanced the practice of bovine medicine.
As an associate professor and extension milk quality specialist in the Department of Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Ruegg’s efforts to advance bovine veterinary practice include projects on antimicrobial resistance of mastitis pathogens; the influence of cow and farm hygiene on milk safety and quality; and the use of Petrifilm® products to diagnose mastitis. Her extension program is focused on enhancing on-farm implementation of best management practices to improve milk quality and safety. In addition, Dr. Ruegg is a frequent speaker at dairy and veterinary conferences in the U.S. and internationally. For these and other contributions, Dr. Ruegg was selected by her peers as the winner of this year’s Award of Excellence.
