The USDA-approved, source- and age-verification program is simple and cost-effective for producers who want to cut down on compliance paperwork and focus on the business of raising cattle.
Mike Samples, Farmers & Ranchers manager, says the new verification offering resulted in $3-5/cwt. premiums for the first consignment of QSA source- and age-verified cattle.

Insecticide ear tag
KMG Chemicals' Avenger™ insecticide ear tags rely on Ectoran™, a new class of chemical never before used in animal health, to prevent and control flies and pests in cattle. Used according to label directions, performance data suggest Avenger tags present no resistance against targeted pests, including pyrethroid-resistant horn flies. In addition to controlling horn flies and ear ticks, the tag also aids in control of face flies, lice, stable flies and houseflies.

Added DNA analyses
Merial adds three, multiple-market DNA analyses to its Igenity® profile — quality grade, marbling and breed-specific horned/polled.
Quality and marbling analyses are similar, but interpretation of the results differ, with each profiled animal given a score from 1-10 for quality grade and marbling. Quality-grade analysis shows the genetic potential for a group of cattle to grade Choice, whereas high marbling score demonstrates the potential that animal and its progeny have to express marbling.
Breed-specific horned/polled analysis is available for Hereford and Limousin breeds, with markers for other breeds being developed.
