Interested in the latest products for beef producers? This month we feature Double D Cattle Mats, “BRD Report: From the Fence Post" blog, Enroflox 100, Roto Mix's VX Series Single Auger Vertical Mixers, Verified Beef feeder calf program and Worksaver's skid steer attachment.
1. Improved animal traction
Double D Cattle Mats™ from the Double D Family Mat Shop help minimize animal injury on slick and unforgiving surfaces. Consisting of woven discarded tire treads fastened with stainless-steel bolts, the mats are virtually indestructible. Scored concrete can hurt animal hooves, but Double D Cattle Mats offer a soft, firm surface. The heavy mats stay put in heavily traveled areas like alleyways, sale barns, vet clinics, packing plants, trailers – anywhere livestock encounter slick surfaces. They’re especially beneficial around squeeze chutes.

A standard 4-ft.-by-10-ft. mat in front of the chute costs less than $450, while the loss of one 1,100-lb. steer at $1.30/lb. could cost around $1,500. That cost of injury more than justifies the price of a mat that will last for years, the manufacturer says.

Via the Merck Animal Health-sponsored blog, experts throughout the country will provide insights and best practices about stress, nutrition, transportation, facilities management and clinical signs of disease, as well as comparative studies, relevant peer-reviewed articles and industry news. Contributing bloggers will include university researchers, nutritionists and livestock producers, as well as Merck Animal Health veterinarians.

4. Roto-Mix auger series offers value
The new VX Series Single Auger Vertical Mixers by Roto-Mix offer the small- to medium-sized cow-calf and heifer operations an efficient, durable feed mixer that delivers a high-quality total-mixed ration at an affordable price. Three models, the VX-315, VX-415 and VX-515, provide capacities in 300, 400 and 500 cu. ft., respectively, and are all under 100 in. in height. The low-profile mixer series enables nearly all types of loaders, even skid steers, to load feed without clearance concerns. Plus, the choice of a right- or left-side discharge is standard, along with a side bolt-on conveyor option to allow for easy bunk feeding.

The series also features innovative “wing kickers” at the bottom of the augers to force all the ration out for excellent clean-out. Options include a hay chain ring that reduces spillage of larger loads, and round and square bales. Knife options are available for processing hay and other rations. For feeders who want more capacity, Roto-Mix offers rubber extenders to add those crucial extra cubic feet.

5. Feeder calf program
Verified Beef, a national ranch calf certification company, announces its Reputation Feeder Cattle (RFC) program for feedlots. The program consists of three parts:

The Genetic Merit Scorecard evaluates commercial calves based on a producer’s bull battery, historical average weaning weight and cowherd size.

The Calf Management component certifies steps taken by the ranch to prepare calves for the next owner, specifically the administration and timing of vaccinations, deworming, and other pre-/post-weaning management.

The Age and Source verification provides producers the necessary documentation for certain downstream market channel partners.

Verified Beef is also introducing a certificate for cattle care and handling based on the Beef Quality Assurance standard.
