As low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets grow in popularity, beef takes center stage once again on Americans’ dinner plates.

On The Magic Pill, Halle Berry & the Ketogenic Diet

In 2017, a documentary titled, “The Magic Pill” was released on Netflix. The documentary explains how low-fat diets deprive the body of essential nutrients and the proper support to fuel brain function, and it highlights the ketogenic diet — one that focuses on animal proteins and healthy fats.

Although I haven’t watched it yet, there’s been plenty of chatter on social media about it. From what I’ve read, the documentary follows seven different people facing various health challenges, and it debunks the mainstream health advice that suggests people should avoid red meat to ward off diseases as they age.

As the ketogenic diet continues to grow in popularity, many are calling it just another fad — one that will quickly go away to make room for the next get-thin-quick dietary regime. However, there is certainly some merit to this way of eating; after all, meat has been the basis of healthy diets since the beginning of time; it’s only been in the last 40-50 years that doctors and nutritionists have changed their tunes and started recommending more carbohydrates in the diet.

If the rates of obesity, cancer, diabetes and heart disease are any indication, the results of following this dietary advice are quite obvious — it’s been a disaster of epic proportions and a failed experiment on human health.

So perhaps society is waking up to this cold truth, and consumers may be turning their attentions to animal fats and proteins once again. Considering Americans will consume a record-breaking amount of meat this year, this could be an indication that a shift in thinking has already taken place.

Celebrity endorsements of these types of healthy diets don’t hurt either. We already know that Angelina Jolie, one of the most widely celebrated and successful Hollywood actresses of our time, considers steak to be her beauty secret.

Most recently, the beautiful and talented A-list actress Halle Berry discussed her dietary habits with PEOPLE magazine.

According to Abby Stern for PEOPLE | Food, Berry says she follows the “trendy, low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat eating plan.”

Berry (age 51) told PEOPLE, “I don’t really eat pasta, anything with sugar, it’s very much meat-based. I eat meat. I enjoy chicken and beef and a lot of vegetables.”

Stern writes, “Berry has been very public about her love for the ketogenic diet. On a recent appearance on Live! With Kelly and Ryan, she shared that the plan works for her as a diabetic.”

Berry said, “I eat healthy fats all day long, avocado, oil, coconut oil and I use butter, but don’t have any sugar. So when your body gets trained to burn fats, it’s constantly on fat-burning mode—that’s the secret.”

Hey, if it works for these ageless Hollywood women, it works for me! I’ll gladly take a page from these gorgeous women and eat more meat to help me stay youthful, healthy and energized. Plus, with the added bonuses of promoting lean muscle mass and optimal brain function, a meat-based diet can help us stay sharp, focused and strong as we age. What’s not to love?
