Beef Checkoff

The 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) are in the works, and before the ink dries on the paper, here’s your chance to voice your opinions and share critical research on the benefits of beef in the diet.

In July, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) launched a campaign encouraging producers to participate in the dialogue and submit comments to the DGA Committee. You can submit comments using the hashtag #BenefitsofBeef.

In case you missed my previous post on this topic, click here.

The #BenefitsofBeef campaign will come to an end on August 13.

According to an NCBA press release, “This is the last week to have your voice heard and tell the DGA Committee that you support beef as a part of a healthy diet! If you have not submitted a comment through NCBA before, this is the perfect opportunity because the decisions the committee make this year will last until the guidelines are updated again in five years.”

With pre-generated talking points ready to roll, it should only take a few minutes to submit your comments.

This is a critical time to get your views into the DGA Committee. In July, the committee released its scientific report, which provides an assessment of the science and nutritional research that will help shape the guidelines.

NCBA is encouraging the USDA and Health and Human Services to incorporate the science that supports beef in the diet.

Per NCBA, the committee should:

  • Clearly recommend beef as a lean meat choice.

  • Highlight the practicality of beef as a premier protein which uniquely contributes to a healthy lifestyle, especially in early years.

  • Utilize the latest, most rigorous scientific evidence on saturated fat recommendations.

  • Reinforce beef’s role in health dietary patterns.

Now, if you would prefer not to submit via NCBA’s platform, you can always head directly to the Federal Register and join the 21,500+ people who have already weighed in on the discussion.

For talking points, consider checking out the Nutrition Coalition, which describes in detail the flawed methodology of the committee in shaping previous recommendations.

I could write an entire book on the #BenefitsOfBeef. Until that day comes, I encourage you to help spread the good word with the DGA Committee. The decisions they make moving forward will impact Americans for a generation.
