The effects of the midterm election on the beef industry, and the Food and Drug Administration’s regulatory changes for antibiotic and implant usage, are the hot topics on the agenda for the upcoming Cattle Feeders Day event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center.

Colin Woodall, CEO of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, will talk about the impacts of the recent election on the beef industry, while Hayley Springer and Tara Felix, Penn State Beef Extension, will cover recent changes to antibiotic and impact usage.

Also featured is Blaine Corners, senior nutritionist with Beef Strategic Technical Services, who will talk about “Managing High-Risk Cattle in the Feedlot.”

The cost to attend the meeting is $20.

Regional farmers appointed to USB board

USDA has appointed 19 new farmer-leaders — including several from Michigan, Ohio and the Northeast — to serve on the United Soybean Board (USB). In addition, 24 farmer-leaders were reappointed.

Forty-six leaders and alternates will serve three-year terms, and one new appointed member will serve a one-year term.

The soybean checkoff provides significant value to farmers by continuing to fund programs that build preference for U.S. soybeans across the country and throughout the world. Authorized by the Soybean Promotion, Research and Consumer Information Act, the checkoff is composed of 77 members representing 29 states, in addition to the Eastern and Western regions.

The number of seats on the board and farmer representation is based on bushels produced in each of the production regions. Members must be soybean farmers nominated by a qualified state soybean board. The 2022 USB chairman is Ralph Lott, a grower from New York state.
