As we switch our calendars to January 2014, I’ve rounded up the first headlines of the New Year that ranchers should know about.
1. Prince William Is Going Back To School To Study Agricultural Management
I doubt President Obama will ever take such a keen interest in learning about food, but I’m impressed with Britain’s Prince William, who will be studying agricultural management at Cambridge University in 2014. Since food security and national security go hand-in-hand, Prince William is seeking to better understand agriculture in order to "help provide the Duke with an understanding of contemporary issues affecting agricultural business and rural communities in the UK."

2. HSUS Seeks Employee To Fill Director Of Horse Rescue & Adoption Program In Texas
It's quite unlikely any of you are going to apply for a job with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), so I don’t post this as an important headline for you job hunters out there. But I did want to point out this HSUS job description for a director of a horse rescue and adoption program in Texas. The job calls for five years of fundraising experience as a must-have requirement, and says equine management experience would be nice, too. Oh, and your equine skills must follow HSUS guidelines -- as if the two go hand-in-hand. What would HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle ask you to do with a sick, aging horse, for example? Simple, just shoot it in the head. Forget about the waste of meat and by-products that horse could offer. That is too abusive to the animal. Let it rot in the trees behind the barn.
3. Wall Street Journal Lists Best And Worst Ads Of The Year
I was pleased to read that Dodge Ram trucks had the best commercial advertisement for 2013, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
WSJ writes, “The two-minute commercial, which aired during the Super Bowl, paid tribute to American farmers with a montage of agricultural photos accompanied by a voice-over of the late radio host Paul Harvey reading his essay ‘So God Made a Farmer.’
“The video has been viewed online more than 22 million times and has generated hundreds of media stories and mentions. Ram gained nearly a percentage point in market share between January and October, according to Chrysler.”
I was also in full agreement with WSJ’s listing of Chipotle’s ad campaign as one of the worst of 2013.
WSJ writes, “A three-minute animated video ad that pokes fun at the processed-food industry shows a scarecrow getting a job at a food factory, where he encounters chickens being pumped full of neon liquid. The scarecrow eventually returns to the farm and makes his own food using fresh vegetables.”
According to Chipotle, the commercial aims to show the difference between naturally raised meat and conventionally raised meat. However, in a hypocritical move by the company, Chipotle now serves conventionally raised beef to fill its popular burritos, despite the company’s smear campaign against it.
