To kick off your work week, I’ve wrangled up four headlines worth reading. The topics range from agricultural advocates at work, with sustainability expert Jude Capper defending feedlots and pork producer Lori Stevermer taking on Chipotle. Plus, we’ve got stories from 4-H parents, lamenting about how they keep their kids busy and productive during the dog days of summer and at the county fair.
Here are 4 ag reads to start your Monday off right:
1. “Is feedlot beef bad for the environment?” featured on the Wall Street Journal
Here is an excerpt: “Robert Martin, director of the Food System Policy Program at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, says beef feedlots spread pollution for miles. Jude L. Capper, a livestock sustainability consultant based in Britain who has worked with animal health organizations and meat industry groups, says feedlots are an efficient use of resources.”
2. “Chipotle is taking serious heat for its new carnitas supplier” featured on Delish
Minnesota Pork Producer Council President Lori Stevermer recently called out the Tex-Mex brand for looking across the pond for pork. "What do you have against U.S. pig farmers?" Stevermer asks, before pointing out Chipotle's seemingly hypocritical values.
3. “Dog days and other lies of summer” by Holly Spangler for Dakota Farmer
Spangler writes, “Farm kids don't have any need for fancy day camps or other time fillers. Let's lead calves, play in the mud, ride bikes...or paint something!”
4. “One more day” by Jennifer M. Latzke for High Plains Journal
About 4-H parents, Latzke writes, “They’ve almost made it across the finish line. Just one more day of hot and crabby children, over-sugared on fair food and dizzy from carnival rides. One more day of fighting that Angus steer that your daughter calls “My Boo,” and you privately call “Satan’s Minion.” One more day of juggling the schedules of three children who have to monitor the inside exhibits, volunteer at the concession stand and still manage to find time to draw you into their petty childhood bickering. One more day of quick cold-water showers in the camper and trying to feed a family of five with a two-burner stove and a microwave.”
