Celebrate Spring with Baby Calves and Fresh Optimism!

Spring is here, which means the grass is greening up, the neighbors have gotten antsy and started planting already, baby calves are racing through the pasture and kids are ready to start working on their show-calf projects for the summer. Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite times of the year, and it goes without saying, it's also an incredibly busy time for farmers and ranchers.

Despite our busy schedules, it's time to celebrate the great things we do as producers to be good stewards of the land and caregivers to the animals. That's why the BEEF Daily Baby Calf Photo Contest was launched. It's my hope that consumers will stop by to view the photo album of baby calves and experience the joys of calving season with all of us. Have you sent your calf photo yet? Shoot me an email at by April 21, 2010 to enter. After the deadline, judges will be selecting the top 10 for you, the readers, to vote on! View the complete album here, and share it with your friends!

Now, I'm no agriculture economist, but prices have sure looked good the last couple weeks, haven't they? Maybe it's my youthful enthusiasm. Maybe it's the fact that I'm getting married this year and making plans to expand our family's operation with my husband-to-be. Maybe it's the sunny weather and the baby calves. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm feeling pretty optimistic these days about the future of the beef industry.

What's your take on the state of the industry today? Will these good prices last as beef demand rises during grilling season? Will consumers pay the higher prices in the meat case? Will things start turning around for this struggling economy? Of course, you can share your thoughts in the comments section below, but you can also vote in the latest BEEF poll on the home page. Head there and answer this question: When do you think cattle prices will return to pre-recession levels? So far, 46% have the same optimism as me and say prices will improve this year. What do you think? Vote today!
