As many of you undoubtedly did, I stayed up late watching the poll results to see Barack Obama elected as our 44th President. From my careful observations, I have noticed that the beef industry has been uneasy and divided about who would be the best candidate for agriculture's interests. Whether you like Obama or not, now is the time for us to gather together as an entire industry, with a united message, to work to promote agriculture's needs.
We need Barack Obama to understand our side of the story. It has been said that Obama has quoted Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma, a book about the evils of beef production. If this is truly the case, then it will be more important than ever before for agriculture's voice to be much louder than that of the animal rights activists. The last thing we need is more legislation that makes it harder for us to produce beef products.
So what do you think? America is beginning a brand new chapter in its history today. What needs to change first? The economy? Healthcare? Education? What is your number one priority as a beef producer?
