Memorial Day weekend slows auction barn traffic
It was a typical Memorial Day weekend as very small runs of cattle came to town.
Auction barns saw a very small run of feeder cattle which is normal during the Memorial Day time period as early week auctions were closed down. Prices were mostly steady to $3 higher when there was enough cattle for a good test, but lighter weights had very small numbers and did not test well at all. Steers over 800 lbs. and heifers over 700 lbs. had the highest numbers for a good tests, along with the biggest price increases.
Slaughter cows saw a typical Memorial Day holiday week with many auctions as well as the packing plants shut down on the holiday, so cow numbers were quite a bit lower. Prices were steady to mostly $1 lower but the prices were really close to last year.
