Conjecture about pork demand rising amidst shrinking supplies of the commodity pushed up futures Wednesday while cattle futures also increased.


The average weight of hog carcasses on March 18 throughout the nation was 209.45 lbs. That figure represents a decrease of 1% since January 7. The early January figures were the commodity's heaviest weight since 2002, according to data from USDA.


Furthermore, demand for the meat is seasonal.


"Demand continues to build" in anticipation of April 1, the beginning of season for grilling in the U.S., Don Roose, president of U.S. Commodities in West Des Moines, Iowa. "The weights are also starting to seasonally fall."
