This past week, there was a very big run of feeder cattle with 45,400 head at the test auctions, but this is typical this time of the year because cattle are being moved off of wheat pastures. Feeder cattle must be moved off of wheat that is destined for grain harvest because of the March 15 insurance deadline and the prices were $1-4 lower this week on the heels of the Cattle on Feed report that showed big placements again.
The slaughter cow prices were $1-3 higher even though the receipts at out test auctions were just a little higher. The cow meat prices were higher. Those 90 percent trimmings were almost $2 higher which helped push cow prices higher along with good demand from feeding cow buyers who were bidding against slaughter cow buyers.
