Cull cows, if they’re given much thought at all, are often only an afterthought. But cull cows and bulls can represent as much as 20% of an operation’s gross income in a year, making them an important of a ranch’s profit picture.
Given that, are there opportunities to add value to your cull cows and bulls and enhance market opportunities come sale time? This edition of the Beef Roundtable explores the options and opportunities that the cull cow market can provide to cattle producers. Cody Wright, a professor and Extension beef specialist at South Dakota State University, has experience with management practices that increase cull cow value. He’s joined by Casey Davis, cattle buyer manager for JBS in Green Bay, Wis., a cow plant that harvests both beef and dairy animals. They offer the experience and wisdom that comes from producing and selling, buying and processing cull cows.
