Meat Market Update | Sales Volume Takes Big Jump

Ed Czerwien, USDA Market News reporter in Amarillo, TX, offers a summary of the beef trade for the week ending Sept. 14 and how it impacts the cattle market and beef prices. The sales volume for the week was tremendous, jumping 852 loads compared to last week, the third largest volume so far this year. This jump was driven by domestic demand. Additionally, there was a lot more spot volume sold, though they were at cheaper prices. The out-front sales were up as well, indicating once again good demand for October and November.

Additionally, Czerwien explains that the latest average national steer carcass weight continues to follow closely last year's numbers. However, cooler weather and improved feedlot performance usually increases those carcass weights until they normally set the yearly high sometime in October.
