Rancho Feeding Corporation of Petaluma, CA, has recalled 8.7 million lbs. of beef because it processed "diseased and unsound animals" and carried out these activities "without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection," USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Saturday.

The affected products include beef tripe, tongue, oxtail, liver, hearts and other offal cuts produced between Jan. 1, 2013 and Jan. 7, 2014, and shipped to distribution centers and retail establishments in California, Florida, Illinois and Texas.

FSIS says because animals were processed without full inspection, products are "unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce."
