There's a race going on in the pickup truck business. First, there's a lot of movement to reduce the weight of the average pickup truck, while maintaining strength and durability, to get fuel economy up. Ford is actually leading the weight race with its aluminum F-150, which still a top seller.
On the fuel economy side, however, Ram has been a winner in the 1500/150 class of pickups with its introduction of a diesel engine a few years ago. And there's talk of a new diesel power plant coming from Ram at the upcoming North American International Auto Show. Now Ford is upping the ante on diesel power with a new F-150 Power Stroke diesel that could offer as much as 30 mpg on the highway, and provide up to 11,400 pounds of towing capacity.
That's right, Ford has never offered a diesel in the F-150 class. That 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine in the F-Series Super Duty trucks has been a market winner for the company; and there's been talk of a diesel in the lighter truck class for some time. In fact, Ford offers a diesel of similar size and design to the new F-150 engine in other global markets. But this new engine is different.
According to Ford, the same team that brought you that 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel for Super Duty pickups has designed and engineered this new 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 diesel.
Ford starts taking orders for trucks with the new engine mid-January with deliveries beginning this spring. The new engine will be available in both 4x2 and 4x4 F-150 pickups. Retail customers can get the engine as an option on the 2018 F-150 Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum edition SuperCrew trucks with either a 5.5 foot or 6.5 foot bed configuration, and SuperCab trucks with a 6.5-food bed.
Fleet customers who use their truck for work can get the new engine on all F-150 trim levels with SuperCrew 5.5-foot or 6.5-foot bed configurations, and SuperCab trucks with a 6.5 foot bed.
