Ranching isn’t always easy, but for those who are passionate about land and livestock, the rewards far outweigh the risks.
While cowboys are the independent type, raising beef isn’t a job you can do entirely solo. That’s where good help comes into play.
For our ranch, it’s a family affair. We all pitch in when there’s work to be done, and each of us contribute different skill sets to accomplish the job at hand. It’s not just the obvious stuff like feeding cows, fixing fence, working calves, baling hay or hauling manure — it’s the little things like putting together an ad for bull sales, making meals to take the field or watching the kids while we tackle a job outside.
Of course, there’s seasonal hired help and the goodwill of friendly neighbors who are always there for us in a pinch. Life is always made a bit easier with a good cow dog and a horse or two (or in our case ATVs).
And when I think about good help on the ranch, I can’t forget our trusted veterinarians, nutritionists and fellow seedstock producers who are always willing to offer their help, advice, mentorship and friendship.
Yes, good help is hard to find, and once you find someone you can trust and who understands your vision, you better hang onto them tight because they are worth their weight in gold!
This month, BEEF has teamed up with a great sponsor, Durango, to salute the men, women, cow dogs, horses and kids who help keep our beef cattle enterprises running smoothly.
Today I’m excited to introduce a brand new photo contest called, “Best Ranch Hands,” and we are seeking your best images that pay tribute to the helpers who keep your operation running.
The deadline for entries (one entry per person please) is noon on July 23, 2018. We’ll announce our finalists on July 24, and as tradition, we’ll ask you, our loyal readers, to help select our grand and reserve champion photographers.
Durango has generously donated a pair of boots for our most popular photograph, and BEEF is giving away a $50 VISA gift card for the reserve winner. Plus, we have three pairs of boot socks to give to voters so we’ll randomly select three winners who take the time to help us select our champions. Voting will end on July 30, and we’ll announce our top spots at the month’s end on July 31.
To enter, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with your mailing address and photo name and title.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with, and as always, check back frequently as we’ll be adding new entries to our gallery each day throughout the contest. Thanks for participating!
