Team Beef members: Check out this virtual run to promote beef in North Dakota

If you’ve been a spectator or competitor at your local 5Ks, half marathons or triathlons in the last couple of years, you may have noticed an increasing number of folks wearing bright red shirts emblazoned with the words “Team Beef” on them. These shirts represent individuals who believe in the power of protein to fuel their busy, active lifestyles. Team Beef has reached hundreds of thousands of people and has been a very successful driver for beef demand among the athletic crowd.

Whether it’s a small town 5K or the Boston Marathon, Team Beef has members competing in events all across the country. Members range from the beef lover to the beef producer, babies in strollers to the elderly. It’s truly one of those positive beef promotions that brings people together and makes a difference.

In addition to being a proud supporter and member of Team Beef, I’m also excited to promote a great event hosted by the North Dakota Cattle Women (NDCW) each year called “Beefin’ It Up: Fuel For The Finish.”

Each year, this 5K/10K run/walk and kids’ half-mile fun run promotes beef with post-race beef snacks and a beef t-shirt. In addition, through the race proceeds, the NDCW has been able to purchase more than 1,600 agricultural books, including my children’s book, “Levi’s Lost Calf,” which were donated to schools and libraries across the state.

The NDCW has planned another great event for the 2016 race season. Mark your calendars for this year’s event on Oct. 1 in Mandan, N.D. The fifth annual event also offers a unique “virtual run” option for folks who are unable to make the race but still want to be a part of the event.

This year, a portion of the event’s proceeds will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Dakota. The Make-A-Wish organization grants the wishes of children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. The North Dakota Chapter has been making wishes come true since 1985 and the NDCW are proud to support this organization with race proceeds.

According to Kathy Tokach, NDCW member and race organizer, “The race is open to everyone, from dedicated athletes to individuals who just want to get some heart-healthy exercise. High-quality, nutrient-dense protein, like beef, plays an important role in overall health and wellness. Eating nutrient-dense beef as part of a balanced diet and being physically active can be part of the solution to maintaining a healthy weight, and a growing body of evidence shows the nutrients in lean beef, such as protein, iron and B-vitamins, help maintain a healthy weight, build muscle and fuel physical activity.”

The pre-registration deadline is Sept. 1, so be sure to get signed up for early registration discounts. More information about the race can be found on the event Facebook page. Click here for registration information and learn how to support the event through the virtual run option.

Will you be participating in this year’s event in Mandan or virtually? What other Team Beef events have you competed in this year, and do you think the Team Beef jerseys help promote beef to athletes? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
