A storm system currently arriving in the Northwest will race southeastward, crossing the central and southern Plains during the weekend.

Subsequently, the system will track eastward, reaching the mid-Atlantic states on Monday.

Following Friday’s precipitation in the Northwest, the focus for significant wintry weather – snow, sleet and freezing rain – will shift to a west-to-east axis stretching from the Central Plains to the mid-Atlantic.

Very cold air trailing the storm system will result in sub-0°F readings next week as far south as portions of the Central Plains and Midwest.

Freezes should extend into areas along and north of a line from south-central Texas to northern Florida, with key winter agricultural regions in the Deep South in Texas and peninsular Florida likely to remain above 32°F.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of below-normal temperatures across the eastern half of the country as well as the south-central U.S., while warmer-than-normal weather will prevail across the northern High Plains and much of the West.

Meanwhile, near- or below-normal precipitation across much of the country should contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions in a few areas, including peninsular Florida, southern Texas, the northwestern half of the Plains and the Upper Midwest.
