Mike Pearson examines a new world record for soybean yields by a Georgia producer.
Alex Harrell set a new world record for soybean yields with 206.7997 bushel per acre Aug. 23.
Harrell set the record in Smithville, Ga. He broke the record by yielding more than 16 bushel per acre than the last record set.
Harrell entered the University of Georgia Extension yield contest with the help of Randy Dowdy who set the last record in 2019. This is making many growers in the south rethink how they can maximize soybean production.
Harrell grew corn in the plot in 2022 and planted a cover crop last winter.
Then he planted 85,000 per acre soybeans April 5 in 30 inch rows.
Then every Monday, Harrell would check the trend lines for the fields for fertility needs and use the irrigator to fill the needs. He also didn't wait to find problems using fungicide and sprayed for stink bugs and others pests. He also didn't stop feeding the plants once the pods were filling.
Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, a farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
