Roundup Ready® alfalfa is on track for introduction in mid 2005. The initial seed release is expected to be 1 million lbs., with fall dormancy 3 to fall dormancy 8 types of varieties being released the first year.

Monsanto has licensed the technology for alfalfa to Forage Genetics International (FGI), Prior Lake, MN, which will license the technology to other seed companies for development of Roundup Ready varieties. Unlike other Roundup Ready crops in which the trait was incorporated into existing varieties, the alfalfa development was a forward-breeding process. This means only new varieties will carry the Roundup Ready technology.
