Calving season is in full swing at our house, and it really never gets old seeing new life arrive on the ranch! Despite the exhaustion that comes from sleepless nights as we check for newborn calves in the cold South Dakota weather, it’s thrilling to see our breeding decisions come to fruition as bulls and heifers make their entry into the world.

It’s even more rewarding to see the cows that we care for year-round step into their roles as mothers. From the first-calf heifer to the old matriarch, these girls earn their keep, and we are grateful for them!

Our heifers and cows are the foundation of our seedstock business, and we take great pride in raising females that are maternal, feminine, good milkers, docile and easy-keeping, with longevity, breeding consistency and performance-oriented. These are the types we sort into our replacement pen each year, and being extremely selective about our females pays off in the long run, without question.

What are the most important traits for you when selecting breeding heifers? What makes a great cow? What are you looking for in your next generation of females on the ranch?

These are the questions we would like to answer in our new photo contest titled, “Next Generation Females.”

Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim (BI), this photo contest celebrates the foundation females of the ranch and honors the work they do each year.

In this contest, we are seeking images of the best females on your ranch. It could be a group of replacement heifers you're developing or the matriarch old cow that consistently raises a big bull calf each year. We want to see the present and future of your herd by highlighting outstanding maternal genetics in beef operations across the country.

To enter this contest, simply email a photo, caption and your name and mailing address to BEEF Daily Editor Amanda Radke at [email protected]. One entry per email address, please. However, if you have multiple images you would like to submit, please consider entering them with a family member’s name. Thank you!

We will accept entries from now until 8 a.m. CST on Feb. 27.

Finalists will be selected and announced on Feb. 28.

Voting will commence and be open until March 11, and we need your help in selecting our champions!

We will announce our winners on March 12. Four lucky photographers will receive $50 VISA gift cards, courtesy of BI. Plus, three voters will be randomly selected to win BEEF hats from the BEEF editorial team.

Stop back often as we will be updating photo entries each day into a gallery, which you can view here.
