Ranchers support area youth to boost 4-H cattle program in county.
May 28, 2012
Many people are celebrating May Beef Month in various ways, but for David and Mary Trowbridge of Tabor, NE, it's all about the kids; 4-H kids that is! David and Mary grew up in Nebraska and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Married in 1976, the couple relocated to Iowa where David began managing the Gregory Feedlot near Randolph in 1977 while Mary began work at a school district in Bellevue, NE.
Thirty-five years later, Mary is still working within the same school district while David is still overseeing the expansive Gregory cattle operation. The Trowbridges have four children: Jason, Justin, Tiffani and Mackenzie, along with five grandchildren. David is on the board of directors for both the Iowa Cattlemen's Association and the American Hereford Association. They raise Hereford and Angus cattle.
These days David and Mary continue to oversee young people through 4-H. After watching beef numbers begin to dwindle at the Mills County Fair, they decided to do something about it by offering a program whereby young people could get involved by raising feeder calves and breeding heifers. With the cattle herd near Tabor, the 4-H members are educated in the process of feeding and nurturing the calves in preparation for showing their animal at the fair in Malvern. The 4-Hers actually "go to class," so they will fully understand what they're undertaking, getting the most out of the process themselves while at the same time helping to raise a calf of the highest quality and temperament.
