A light frost hit Northern Illinois late last week, but the cold snap won’t affect the harvest, says Mark Schneidewind, manager of the Will County Farm Bureau.

“It wasn’t a killing frost, so we’re still doing fine,” he says.

The soggy spring and dry July affected the corn crop more seriously, he adds.

“Overall, it’s going to be a below-average harvest,” Schneidewind says. “Either it was too wet or it was too dry, so we lost some bushels.”

Agronomists inspected Will County corn fields recently and determined that much of the crop hasn’t matured enough yet for harvest. Schneidewind said the harvest will probably be 175-180 bu./acre. A bumper crop would be 200-220 bu./acre.
