Iowa and Nebraska show support for beef producers
Iowa has declared April as "Meat on the Table" Month.
March 19, 2021
Two against one, so far.
Iowa and Nebraska governors are showing their commitment to agriculture by signing proclamations to promote agriculture. In Nebraska, March 20 is set aside as “Meat on the Menu Day” by Governor Pete Ricketts.
“On this day, Nebraskans are encouraged to purchase and eat beef, pork, chicken, lamb or another kind of meat,” Ricketts said in a news release. “Agriculture is Nebraska’s No. 1 industry, and beef is our largest segment of production,” Ricketts added. “While meat is one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat, there are radical anti-agriculture activists that are working to end meat production and our way of life here in Nebraska. I have designated March 20th as ‘Meat on the Menu Day’ to highlight the importance of meat in a good diet as well as to provide an opportunity to support our farmers and ranchers.”
In Iowa, Gov. Kim Reynolds proclaimed April as “Meat on the Table Month.” During this time, she encourages Iowans to support the livestock industry through meat consumption and purchases.
The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa State Beef Checkoff Program, alongside beef producers and other industry leaders, appreciate the state’s initiative to promote our meat products. The livestock industry takes great pride in caring for its animals. Beef producers invest in herd development, health and nutrition planning, and best management practices to ensure they provide consumers with a high-quality source of protein.
The day is being set aside to counteract March 20, set aside as "MeatOut Day" as Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed a proclamation as a day to abstain from eating meat for what he asserts would benefit human and planetary health. The proclamation was seen as a direct insult to the state’s livestock producers, which represent the second largest industry in the state of Colorado.
Meanwhile, others across the country are fighting back against Colorado by proposing to purchase meat, donate meat and eat meat. Some are using social media to get the word out and use the hashtag #MeatInDay.
