Another big run of feeder cattle, slaughter cows

Slaughter cows were mostly lower, but another big run came to town as ranchers start culling.

Another big run of feeder cattle with 34,900 head at the test auctions, which was just a little higher than last week but compared to only 22,000 head last year. Prices were mostly steady to $2 higher, but Wednesday prices did jump more compared to last week because of the big CME rally and hedging ability.

Turning to slaughter cows, another big run of cows to town with 7,000 head at our test auctions which was close to last week, but about 1,000 head over last year. Prices were mostly $1-3 lower but some auctions quoted prices $7-8 lower, and the biggest drop was in big ranching areas with lots of beef cows moving.
