As beef cows head to pasture, slaughter cow prices rise

Feeder cattle and slaughter cow prices both stayed on the positive side of steady this week.

There was another good run of feeder cattle at test auctions with 37,400 head, which was about 10,000 lower than last week’s very big run and about 8000 head higher than last year. Prices were mostly steady to $2 lower, but there was not a good test on lighter weight calves that had very small numbers at most of the auctions.

Slaughter cow numbers are starting their normal decline as beef cows are turned out on pastures. Prices were $1-5 higher because of the smaller numbers even though the cow cutout dropped a lot lower.
