Cow meat prices hold up slaughter cow market

Feeder cattle numbers were down a bit from last week, but year over year, volume is still much higher. Prices were lower.

There was another solid run of feeder cattle with 40,200 head at the test auctions, which was down about 5,000 head from last week, but 19,000 head higher than last year. Prices continue to drop big on steers, but heifers were mostly steady and the yearling steers were $3-6 lower.

Slaughter cow numbers were about the same as last week with 6,900 head at test auctions. Prices really jumped higher and were mostly $4-6 higher, but that is normal increases this time of the year. Cow meat prices were higher again this week pulling the cow prices higher and those 90% trimmings were $243.83 on Wednesday, which was $40 dollars higher than the same day last year.
