Cow slaughter volume highest in years

Audio-Cow slaughter volume highest in years

The trend continues. More slaughter cows and volume was up 4,000 head over the prior week. Total volume was the biggest weekly number in many years.

There was a very big fall run of feeder cattle with 52,100 head at the test auctions, which was about 18,000 head higher than the previous week. The prices are still bouncing around with some higher and some lower.

And it was another week of very big run of cows at the twenty test auctions with 15,100 head, which was about 4,000 head higher than the previous week and the biggest weekly number in many years. The slaughter cow prices were mostly steady to $2 higher but some dairy cow auctions that had big numbers of lean type cows were lower priced. This week's western auctions also included big numbers of replacement type cows that actually brought more buyers to the auctions so bidding was active.
