Fall feeder cattle run larger than 2017

Prices varied as more feeder cattle came to auction barns this week. Some auction trends were $4 lower; some $5 higher.

Auction barns are seeing a typical normal seasonal fall run of feeder cattle with numbers that were 5,000 head higher than last week, but 9,000 head higher than last year. Yearling prices were mostly steady to $2 higher but calf prices had more variation with bigger numbers. Some auction trends on calves were $4 lower and some auctions up to $5 higher.

Slaughter cow numbers continue to make seasonal increases as more cows were sorted and culled at ranches and farms. The slaughter cow prices took a big drop on the heels of declining cow meat prices.
