Meat Market Update | Choice rib primal drops $15

Ed Czerwien, market analyst based in Amarillo, Texas, offers a concise summary of how last week's beef trade impacted the cattle market and beef prices.

The daily spot Choice box beef cutout ended the week last Friday at $214.29 , which was $1.68 higher compared to previous Friday.  It has been helped by increasing daily Choice rib primal lately but that was $4 lower by Friday. It rebounded some on Monday as product was ordered after a good weekend of sales. However it then dropped $15 dollars on Tuesday, December 11 as we come to the end of the purchasing period for prime rib for Christmas parties. Last year it dropped $40 for two weeks in a row.

However the daily Choice loin, round, and chuck primals were all higher for the week off setting the small rib decline. Hopefully the round and chuck will continue to climb as families start cooking more roasts this time of the year because that will offset some of the upcoming big rib decline.
