Meat Market Update | Could a price drop be ahead?

Ed Czerwien, market analyst based in Amarillo, Texas, offers a concise summary of how last week's beef trade impacted the cattle market and beef prices.

The weekly average Choice cutout which includes all types of sales including the daily Choice cutout was $211.22 which was $0.42 lower. These prices are similar to 2015 and 2017 when they both balanced out some before beginning a drop before the Christmas season. We'll watch closely to see if follows that same trend in 2018.

The weekly average Choice rib primal was $2 higher, rebounding and following the daily primal increases again. The weekly average Choice loin primal was $1 higher. The weekly average Choice chuck and round primals were $1-4 lower this week which offset the rib and loin primal increases because these two represent a much bigger portion of the carcass.
