Meat Market Update | Rib primal rally kicks off earlier in 2018

Ed Czerwien, market analyst based in Amarillo, Texas, offers a concise summary of how last week's beef trade impacted the cattle market and beef prices.

The weekly average Choice cutout which includes all types of sales including the daily Choice cutout was $203.71, up .87 cents from the previous week. It was no doubt pulled higher by the rising Choice rib primal that was helped by out-front sales.

The biggest out-front sales this week included a whopping 3.4 million lbs of Choice bone-in ribeye that had an average price $8/cwt. higher than the average formula price. The Choice rib primal normally starts a very big rally during the fall ahead of the Christmas party season when prime rib is a very big part of company employee parties but might be starting that earlier this year.
