Meat Market Update | Wholesale prices see an uptick

Wholesale prices begin to pick up momentum and we enter 2020.

The daily spot Choice box beef cutout ended the week on Friday at $210.04, which was $1.55 higher compared to previous the Friday. The same Friday last year saw the Choice cutout at $212.46, dropping 2 lower that week last year. But it now climbed higher on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at $212.76, making it slightly higher than last year now.

This week, the daily Choice Rib primal was about $1 higher by Friday. The daily Choice Loin was $2 higher and the daily Choice Chuck and Round were steady to $1 higher.

So all major primals are starting to improve as we get into this new year. There were 759 loads sold for the week in the daily box beef cutout which was about 11% of the total sales.

The weekly average Choice cutout, which includes all types of sales including the daily Choice cutout, was $209.58, 45 cents lower. It is now very close to last year and should climb higher soon.
