More feeder cattle, more slaughter cows

Prices are holding steady as larger runs of feeder cattle and slaughter cows come to town ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

There was another large run of feeder cattle with 41,200 head at the test auctions this week, which was up about 3,000 head from the previous week. The El Reno auction had just about 15,000 head with very big numbers of steers weighing 900-1,100 lbs. and heifers weighing 700-950 lbs. Prices were improving a little again this week and mostly steady to $1 higher.

There were 7,200 head of slaughter cows at the test auctions, which was 1,000 head higher than the previous week. This jump likely is because next week will have auctions shut down for Memorial Day, so you typically see bigger numbers this week. The prices were either side of steady from $1 lower to $2 higher. Prices were helped some by the improving cow meat prices.
