Rains hold back feeder cattle, prices steady to $1 lower

While no one wants to wish away rain, the ongoing showers in some areas of the country did slow feeder cattle and slaughter cow receipts this week. But hopefully, the wheat pastures will benefit in the long-term.

Very big rains for several days cut the feeder cattle receipts down at the test auctions, but should help the wheat pastures soon. Prices for yearlings were mostly $1-2 lower but calf prices dropped more.

Slaughter cow receipts at the test auctions were down just a little primarily due to some Monday auctions not reporting during the holiday. Additionally, like feeder cattle, big rains cut the numbers back in some areas. Slaughter cow prices were mostly steady to $1 lower but cow meat prices dropped quite a bit again.
