If you have been fertilizing your pastures to support your livestock operation, then cutting back on fertilizer this year because of its high cost requires improved management. What about other management and nutritional strategies? What do you need to be thinking about? Dr. Dale Blasi, professor/extension specialist beef cattle nutrition and management, along with Dr. Vanessa Corriher-Olson, extension forage specialist in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences at Texas A&M University, join us to share their thoughts and take your questions. Drought and beef cow slaughter rate: What’s the forecast?
While calf prices have been higher in the first three months of 2022, a large portion of the US remains in significant drought. Most significantly for the cattle sector, drought moved into the Southern Plains during the fall of 2021 and has seemed to intensify over the last several months. Drought conditions are likely the major driver behind current cow slaughter levels, but price levels are adding fuel to the fire. Joining us to talk about the drought and slaughter rates and what that might mean for you as a cattle producer is Don Close, economist with American Ag Credit and Farm Credit Services of America, and Derrell Peel, professor of agricultural economics at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. This is a live session so bring your questions.
