Walmart Canada beefs up sustainable beef commitment

Company commits to an additional 1 million pounds of beef from certified sustainable producers.

Walmart Canada recently announced it has committed to purchasing a total of 2.5 million pounds of beef sourced from certified sustainable Canadian farms and ranches, according to standards set by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB). That’s an additional 1 million pounds of beef, adding to the 1.5 million pounds announced in October 2021.

In May 2021, Walmart Canada became the first retailer in Canada to offer an on-pack CRSB Certified claim in a line of beef products. 100% of the company’s fresh beef is sourced in Canada.

The trays for Walmart Canada’s ground beef are also now 100% recyclable and feature a “How2Recycle” label. This means over 12 million trays – or about 1 million pounds – can avoid landfills each year.

“As we continue on our journey to becoming a regenerative company, we’re always looking for opportunities to provide our customers with options that are better for the planet. Increasing our commitment to sourcing beef from certified sustainable Canadian farms and ranches along with adopting fully recyclable packaging for our ground beef are changes we’re really proud of,” said Rob Pereira, senior director of meat and seafood at Walmart Canada.

Established in 2014, the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) is a collaborative, multi-stakeholder organization focused on advancing environmental, social and economic sustainability in the Canadian beef industry. The CRSB drives recognition and continuous progress in beef sustainability through benchmarking and setting strategic goals and communicating on-the-ground continuous improvement. The CRSB's Certified Sustainable Beef Framework, known as CRSB Certified, was developed to recognize sustainable practices through third party certification, support sustainable commitments for retail and foodservice companies, and build consumer trust through credible, science-based claims about sustainable beef production in Canada.
