Merck Animal Health introduces Once PMH® IN, the only intranasal vaccine to deliver dual bacterial pneumonia protection in healthy beef and dairy cattle, including calves as young as 1 week of age. Once PMH IN aids in the control of respiratory disease caused by Mannheimia haemolytica and prevention of disease caused by Pasteurella multocida – the leading causes of early-onset bovine respiratory disease (BRD).
Available in 10- and 50-dose packages, Once PMH IN is a non-adjuvanted formulation with two dosing options – 1 mL applied in each nostril of the animal, or a 2-mL dose delivered in one nostril. Because there is no vaccine injection site, carcass quality is not compromised. While annual revaccination is recommended, the vaccine can be administered more frequently, depending on the risk assessment for the farm or herd.

Real-time PCR trich test
Life Technologies Corporation’s VetMAX-Gold Trich Detection Kit is the only USDA-licensed, real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test for the detection of Trichomonas foetus. The kit provides veterinary diagnostic laboratories with a test that provides highly sensitive and specific results through real-time PCR amplification of T. foetus DNA.
Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease that leads to early embryonic losses and infertility. Accurate testing to identify positive bulls is the only way to prevent the spread of Trichomoniasis prior to cows being exposed to bulls.
The VetMAX-Gold Trich Detection Kit is an alternative to culture testing, and is a more convenient and more accurate test from one sample run vs. three culture tests spanning a three-week period, the company says. Because of the sensitivity of real-time PCR, samples can be pooled for greater cost efficiency. The VetMAX-Gold Trich Detection Kit is licensed with a USDA label claim for pooling up to five samples.

First Defense® calf immunity
One problem with vaccinating calves at birth is the high concentration of maternal antibodies found in colostrum, which can interfere with a calf’s immune response to a vaccine. To overcome the challenges of newborn calf vaccination and provide immediate immunity, ImmuCell provides the First Defense ® line of USDA-approved concentrated antibody products that can be fed to calves at the same time as colostrum. The products don’t interfere with maternal antibodies and there is no waiting for a response from the calf’s immune system.
It also means less stress because the calf doesn’t have to divert precious energy reserves from maintenance and growth to mounting an immune response.:
ImmuCell antibody products are available in bolus, gel and powder forms, and are also included in some colostrum replace and supplement formulas for added value.

TEGO™ Blood Collection Kit
Traditional pregnancy diagnosis has been performed via rectal palpation or ultrasound. More recently, pregnancy can be detected from 28 days using pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) in blood. When collecting blood in tubes, however, a skilled operator is required to draw the blood sample, after which the tubes are transported cooled and protected against breakage.
TEGO™ overcomes these limitations by utilizing dried blood spots as an alternative for pregnancy diagnosis with the benefits of easy blood collection, shipping cost savings and convenient sample storage. Applied with Allflex® ear tag applicators, the device quickly creates a bleed on the ear and absorbs the blood onto the self-contained blood card. The cards are then placed in envelopes and returned to the lab at room temperature. The laboratory process yields equivalent results to blood tubes to determine pregnancy status.

ONE SHOT® BVD vaccine
ONE SHOT® BVD, one-shot respiratory protection for beef and dairy cattle, is the latest addition to the Zoetis comprehensive vaccine portfolio. The vaccine helps provide combined respiratory protection against Mannheimia haemolytica and bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) Types 1 and 2 viruses in a single dose.
ONE SHOT BVD helps cattle producers expand respiratory vaccination programs that currently include INFORCE™ 3 respiratory vaccine, which is used to help protect beef and dairy calves. Young calves need additional respiratory protection due to underdeveloped immune systems and exposure to environmental stressors, which can cause them to fall victim to respiratory infection, Zoetis says.
“INFORCE 3 and ONE SHOT BVD help provide the antigens that young calves need to build their immunity before being commingled or turned out to pasture,” says Jon Seeger, DVM, managing veterinarian, Zoetis Cattle and Equine Technical Services. “Using the right antigens at the right time helps offer comprehensive respiratory protection from BRSV, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus, parainfluenza 3 (PI3) virus, M. haemolytica and BVD Types 1 and 2 viruses.”
ONE SHOT BVD is available in 10- or 50-dose vials and can be purchased through veterinarians or animal health retailers.

Horn fly treatment
Treating horn flies just got easier, faster and less stressful for cattle, thanks to a new method of delivery from AgriLabs called VetGun™. Manufactured by SmartVet, the CO2-powered VetGun is a precise dosage-delivery system usable from a range of 15-30 ft. away. It propels a soft, gelatin capsule known as an AiM-L VetCap™ that is delivered at 20% of the velocity of a paintball gun.
The gelatin capsule bursts upon impacting the animal, releasing a precise dosage of a U.S. EPA-approved insecticide, which immediately begins to migrate across the animal’s hide to control horn flies and lice. SmartVet says the system offers savings in time and labor otherwise needed to gather cattle for treatment in a chute, and is less stressful to treated animals.
