Beef Roundtable: What to do with all that rained-on hay

Many beef producers across the country have been grateful for the rain that has blessed much of cattle country this summer. But in places, it’s been too much of a good thing, making it difficult to put up high-quality hay. So what can you do with all that low-quality, rained-on hay?

Beef Roundtable can help. This month’s edition features Keith Johnson, Extension forage specialist at Purdue University and John Paterson, retired executive director of producer education at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and a former Extension beef specialist at Montana State University. Tune in for a discussion on some of the factors that cause low-quality hay (it can be more than just rain), how you can determine the feeding value of your hay crop, and the adjustments you’ll need to make this winter to keep your cattle on an adequate nutritional plane.

BEEF and Purdue University have joined forces to launch the Beef Roundtable, a monthly 15-minute video podcast that will feature some of the top leaders in the beef industry. The video podcast, co-hosted by Ron Lemenager, Extension beef specialist at Purdue University and BEEF Senior Editor Burt Rutherford, will feature discussion of current topics of interest to all beef producers.
