Normally in September, Kevin Bradley would not encourage herbicide control of brush and weeds in pastures. This year's different.

"With vigorous growth from moisture and low temperatures, brushy weeds do very well," says the University of Missouri Extension weed-management specialist. "For best results don't spray if brush is under stress. The weather is lining up for good control this fall."

Strong growth improves uptake of herbicides that knocks weeds out. Brushy hard-to-control weeds will be vulnerable.

Weed management depends on the weed and the growing season, Bradley says. "Our research shows mid-September until the end of the month is the best time to kill blackberries and dewberries."
