State lawmakers are returning to the Statehouse; and, for many, it is still a new experience. The November elections produced a large number of new lawmakers which poses problems and opportunities for Indiana agriculture. The large number of first-time legislators presents a unique challenge for very technical industries including agriculture.

Bob Kraft, Indiana Farm Bureau (IFB) local government affairs director, says it will take some time to get the freshman lawmakers up to speed on the issues that are important to farmers.

He also said it is important that farmers work hard to get to know their new lawmakers, “It is vital that Farm Bureau members make the effort and get to know their new lawmakers.” IFB has already conducted several meetings to help local farmers begin to build relationships with their new legislators.
